Review: Delta 737-900 in Coach Y EconomyTak's dispatch released on 9 December 2016

This review of Delta was for a flight from New York City’s LaGuardia Airport LGA Terminal D to Atlanta ATL.

Boarding orderly but slow. Passengers from the end of Boarding Group 2 and onwards were required to short check roller boards with no exceptions (even if it was your one and only bag). This obviously caused a backup and slowdown.

Flight left late as a result of that as well as typical departure traffic.

Plane is comfortable with enough legroom in regular economy for anyone 6’2″ and under. Seat comfortability is suitable for short and perhaps intermediate domestic flights but I don’t think slimline seats are good generally. The upside is Delta’s seats aren’t nearly as bad as some other slimlines I’ve been in.

In flight entertainment (IFE) monitor for my seat did not work. Several requests, several resets and over an hour prompted them to give up, declare it a bad monitor, and grant some SkyPesos as the flight was sold out and thus another seat could not be offered.

Flight attendants seemed happy and professional, much more so than I typically find flying American and United. One of the FAs seemed undertrained with a lack of operational confidence (aka rough around the edges procedurally) but was eager to please.

Complimentary beverage and snack was appreciated. Trash pickup was quick and perfectly timed.

Also very much appreciated the complimentary newspapers for the morning flight, with choices of the Wall Street Journal, USA Today and Financial Times. Great touch.

Row 20 is an exit row with only 2 seats on either side. Shoot for 20B or 20E for plenty of room on the window side.

Overall the Delta 737-900 is, relatively speaking, more comfortable than what I have experienced on United’s cramped 737-900 product.

Other than the IFE mishap and the roller board issue, this Delta flight was a far more pleasant experience than recent flights in economy coach on American and United.

Based on this flight, I’d consider Delta in the future if I didn’t already have elite status on both Star Alliance and One World.
