Notes on the Anthurium Apartment
Anthurium Apartment is located in Wotten Waven, Dominica. It is very close to Roseau by car, and puts you near many of the attractions such as Trafalgar Falls, Boiling Lake, Titou Gorge, Freshwater Lake and Middleham Falls amongst others.
The owner is very friendly, one of those one in a million people you can’t help but love. Her son offers tours and anything else you need but seemed to lose his positive attitude as the stay progressed which seemed because he wasn’t utilized for any tours (e.g. I’m confident he’d be a good guide if one was needed). This detracts slightly from the overall experience and makes things a little less comfortable.
He did however facilitate the arrival ensuring no confusion from town to the house. This was appreciated in lieu of directions. I am confident he would make a good guide as he seems very knowledgeable.
There are three beds in the house. The foam mattress ends up sagging a bit if you sleep in the middle. The other bed was more firm and comfortable.
Water pressure is good in the shower but the temperature is not under your control, as it is dictated by turning a hot water switch on or off. However, even showering with cold water is doable given the Caribbean temperatures.
Internet is okay, albeit slow, but disconnects frequently for (usually) short periods.
Power outlets are a plenty and are both US and British but it seemed many do not work and charging was done in the kitchen area. This was slightly inconvenient but may just have been a temporary thing. In fairness, nothing was mentioned to the owner so its possible a breaker just needed flipping.
The only noise here is from the tree frogs, birds and chickens generally. It was very easy to get a good sleep in the January night temperatures. One excellent item of note was the complete absence of mosquitoes.
Toilet paper and linens were provided as were some fruit that was in season. The kitchen in the rental is stocked with some pots but otherwise its hard to make a good meal with what’s provided although if you asked for things I’m sure they’d lend them to you.
Breakfast was $5 USD and dinner $15. Both of these prices are lofty for the area although the experience of talking with the owner is nice. Otherwise you won’t see her really which is unfortunate given how great she is. (Breakfast was fresh grapefruit juice, eggs from their chickens and some tuna with vegetables and was good)
There is a rum punch bar a 3 minute walk up the street which is fun to check out.
Overall, if you are fine roughing it (which you probably are coming to Dominica) then this is a very good place to say. I got my best sleep in Dominica here. It is also in close proximity to the capital of Dominica, Roseau (10 minutes by car).
I would happily stay at Anthurium Apartment again.
